Janet Damita Jo jackson was born on May 16,1966 in Gary, Indiana, the youngest on nine children to Katherine Esther and Joseph Jackson. She was raised in a lower-middle class and raised as a Jehovah's witness but chose to stop practicing organized religion and have a relationship with God "one-on-one". By the time Janet was a toddler, her older brother's "The Jackson 5" who consist of Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and performing legend Michael Jackson were performing at nightclubs and theathers. With the success of her brother's band the family was able to relocate to Los Angeles in 1971 when the band signed with Motown in 1969. When the Jackson 5 fame grew the father planned for Janet to pursue a career in entertainment although she wanted to become a race-horse jockey instead. Janet said that she wasn't even asked if she wanted to do music or not because it was no choice if she did or didn't.
Janet first got her start in entertainment playing on the sitcom Good Times as Penny Gordon Woods from 1979 to 1980. Even though Janet was doing shows and sitsoms she still wasn't to sure about doing music. Janet released her debut album Janet Jackson it peaked at number six on the billboards then two years later she released Dream Street. Janet was influenced by artists like Teenia Marie, Price and Minnie Riperton. In 1984 Jackson married childhood friend James Debarge but they soon divorced shortly after. Also shortly after the release of Dream Street and her divorce she decided to separate her business from her father because she felt she had to get from under him and leave his home.
Janet got her first huge hit when she took control and released her third album "Control". Control went five times platinum by the RIAA and has sold over fourteen million copies worldwide including hits such as- What Have You Done for Me Lately, Nasty, Control and Lets wait awhile. Then in September 1989 Janet released her fourth album Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation 1814 which went six times platinum by the RIAA and sold over fourteen million copies worldwide also including hits such as- Black Cat, Miss You Much, and Love Will Never Do Without You. Janet first world tour the Rhythm Nation 1814 became the most successful debut by any recording artist. While taking over the music industry she also made her film debut in Poetic Jusice in 1993 with rap legend Tupac Shukur then went on to do films such as The Nutty Professor: The Klumps and Why Did I Get Married.
